The exhibition “Architektur fur die Gemeinschaft” (“Arquitectura para la comunidad”) is conceived as an expansive installation that presents visitors with seven selected construction projects in Mexico, the United States, and France, from Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO, along with workshop events that address the theme of care and community in the architectural practice.
In a 1:1 scale collage specially designed for the exhibition space at the Toni-Areal, topics such as the choice of resource-saving materials are explored, along with monographic information from each project. At the same time, this large collage also reflects the importance of scenography as a working tool in the studio’s design process.
A separate area delves into the studio's collaborative way of working and thinking, focusing on a project for a new building for a Monastery in Neuzelle, Germany. These components allow visitors to follow the construction process, from the project’s conception phase to the building stage, and to better understand why, as a studio, we prioritize working with analog tools (hand drawings, collages, and models). Unlike digital representations, these tools make the project tangible from the beginning and offer us greater freedom, as architects, to explore new possibilities.
Exhibition’s introductory text by curator Karin Gimmi:
“Tatiana Bilbao Estudio takes on a variety of projects, applying a holistic approach that considers both the point of view of those commissioning the construction and the needs of people. Designing, planning, and building with empathy for both human and environment, the studio has a distinctive aesthetic yet never loses sight of the small details.
The main focus of TBE’s work is the design of spaces for community living. Architecture and construction are conceived here as a process in which different people think and act together. Tatiana Bilbao has been widely recognized for her work. With her multidisciplinary team of some forty coworkers, she concentrates her talents on creating livable and aesthetically appealing spaces that can become a platform for people to create their own way of living.
Tatiana Bilbao Estudio always works as a team. Preference is given to analogue working methods such as hand drawings, collages, and physical models. The result is an associative vision of architecture in which the space is concretized by those who use it. The walk-in collage designed especially for this exhibition represents eight current building projects in Mexico, the USA, France, and Germany that illustrate what it will take for architecture to remain relevant in the future.”
