The first layer of protection for our vulnerable bodies is the clothes we wear. We don these garments for protection, warmth, and to shield ourselves from the elements.
From this need arises various types of labor - the maintenance of our textile protections and their cleanliness. The act of washing our clothes holds a social and sociological element. The labor of washing is often relegated to unrecognized domestic work.
Historically, this activity used to take place in communal spaces within the city, fostering a sense of community. However, on a global scale, we now witness the commodification and privatization of clothes washing.
It has become hidden labor carried out in households, often unpaid or uncompensated. With this exhibition, we aim to bring to the forefront of collective consciousness the potential for laundry to be a social activity that strengthens bonds between people.
